As I mentioned the other day, the Flex team has released a ton of information on Flex 4. One of the new features which I am most excited about is the FXG graphic format being developed. What is FXG? From the spec: FXG 1.0 describes an XML-based graphics interchange format for the Flash Platform. FXG contains high-level [...]

In preparation for my talk at BFlex I've created an Adobe Connect recording that illustrates how to install the binary distribution of BlazeDS on an existing ColdFusion 8 multi-server instance. If you're planning on attending my hands-on talk I would highly recommend you watch this recording and get everything configured properly. If you're just looking for help on BlazeDS and CF8 integration, the demo should help you as well. Click here to view the 15 minute recording: http://adobechats.adobe.acrobat.com/p77389617/

Finally, here is the source code and demo for SearchTransition, an application that demonstrates animated transitions that's shown in this video that got posted a few weeks ago. First, let's see the demo: And here's the source code. Note that it's just the one file: no image assets, no other ActionScript code; it all works by simple MXML code and use of the standard Flex effects. I'll leave the explanation of the code and application to the video, so check that out if you haven't seen it yet. Enjoy!

Quick find today.Little while back debugging in FB 3.0.x became a brutal exercise in futility. Finally reached a point where I couldn't debug at all. At the time I was running FF2.x. Initially upgraded to FB3 with no change, well no change, except that suddenly I wasn't entering debug mode (bug: had GreaseMonkey Add-On installed - removing it fixed that). Once I was entering Debug again, it would grind my Mac to a halt. Switched to Safari and it worked perfectly. Figured out that Piclense / CoolIris addon for Firefox was in fact the culprit. I uninstalled that add-on and

I’ve recently talked to a few people who’ve experienced issues trying to use Flex SWCs (created in Flex Builder) in Flash CS3, so I thought I’d post what I know on the topic. For starters, you can’t have any Flex dependencies. This is AS3 and Flash territory-only, friends. Second, CS3 only supports SWCs that have components (display [...]

I came across a free, open source Flash/Flex IDE recently called FlashDevelop. Being a Windows only product I'm sure it won't benefit many ColdFusion Mac lovers, but I have been playing with it a bit and I have to say it is really a pretty damn good IDE. It doesn't have design view like Flex Builder (although there is a slick AIR app on the AIR marketplace that mimmicks design view) but it does have full code completion for MXML and AS2/AS3. It also can compile your project for you. This may be the nudge I needed to play around

The team at PHP Architect have recently announced a new course for Flex and PHP training. The course is split into 7 units and lasts 19 hours, covering everything that a PHP developer needs to know to get up to speed with Flex, including an introduction to Flex and Flex components, and how your Flex application talks to PHP. There's also a session on Adobe AIR, and extending your PHP applications to the desktop.
Developers taking the course will get a first hand look at Flex - the actual application delivering the material was recently rewritten with Flex. As well, the August issue of PHP Architect magazine has an article about creating a chat application with Flex and PHP. Finally, there's a talk about Flex and PHP at their PHP Works conference in Atlanta, from November 12th - 14th.
Flex developer who use PHP on the server have had a lot of great news lately. Andi Gutmans blogged about Adobe supporting the Zend Framework by providing AMF support to the Zend Framework just a few weeks ago.

David Tucker recently posted an article on the Adobe Developer Centre citing 10 common mistakes with developing AIR applications and how to avoid them. I thought I’d quickly compare David’s points against my current AIR project, a remote file-system manager: 1. Making an application platform specific David primarily refers here to the UI/UX differences between platforms, but I also found it essential because I encountered significant performance differences with some file system operations (icon getters, mostly), which were fixed with the help of the Flex Profiler. At the moment we can’t test it on the Linux Alpha, but hopefully we’ll

Anyone who has built forms in Flex knows the frustration of trying to build a good experience with validation using the default Flex components. Validation is not tied to the field, validation messages only show up when you mouseover the invalid fields and when you want to process the form you essentially have to revalidate all of the data, unless you've written custom methods to handle all of your validation. I've spent a couple of days working through this and I was frustrated, to say the least. I sat down with the rest of the team and said "Hey, how

The underlying language for all Flex applications is ActionScript 3. All the Flex components are written in that language. We used ActionScript 3 in order to make the Flex framework maintainable and extensible. When you’re creating a business application, however, you don’t always want to use the lowest-level language available in a framework. In Flex, we created a higher-level language, MXML, an XML language that sits on top of ActionScript. Because MXML is a domain-specific language targeting the rapid development of Flex user interfaces, you can quickly become productive with MXML. View full article...
